On writing slowly

A sentence should be allowed to breathe. I am practicing the patience of leaving one alone until it tells me what it wants to be.

Most of the practice is waiting.

The drafts I like best are the ones I put down and did not touch for a week. They keep their own counsel. When I come back they have decided something without me.
